About St Mary's

St Mary’s Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School lies eight miles from the centre of the City of York. Many of the children travel from surrounding villages spread over a wide rural area. We usually have around 100 children on roll ranging from EYFS to Year 6.

As a Church of England school, our distinctive Christian character supports the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all learners, and aids in their preparation to become responsible citizens. The local parish is actively involved with the school and special services are held at St Mary’s Church in Askham Richard throughout the year. We have a secure site and rigorously uphold safeguarding measures to ensure the safety of all children.

Our Facilities

The school was originally opened in 1899. Over the years it has increased in numbers and the building recently significantly extended. We have four indoor classrooms and one outdoor learning space. The Foundation and Year 1 children in Class 1 benefit from an indoor and outdoor learning area. Class 2 comprises children from Year 1 and 2; Class 3 comprises Year 3 and 4 children, and Class 4 has Year 5 and 6 children.

The classrooms and school hall are equipped with interactive Smartboards and Laptop and iPads are shared within the school. School dinners are cooked on site in the school kitchen, and we have a small library. The school benefits from the Rainbow Room where our trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants complete focused interventions with children.

The school has a wonderful outside learning environment for work and play. We have a hard playground area, a playing field, forest school, and a pond. We have also incorporated shade, seating and quiet areas for the children. Class 1 have access to their own outside area in which they grow plants and a variety of produce. Thanks to the fundraising of our Friends of St Mary’s Group and their hard work we now have a secluded sensory garden for children and staff to use to support well being. Friends of St Mary’s also fundraised for our beautiful outdoor classroom in forest school

Out of School Club

We have a popular wrap around service joined to the school for before and after school. The manager of OOSC is also a teaching assistant in school. We work as one body for a seamless transition.
