School Council

What is the School Council?

  • Our school council represents the views of all pupils. It gives us the opportunity to make our voices heard and feel part of the whole school community.
  • Our school council helps to make changes and improvements to try and make our school a nicer place for everyone.
  • When we meet, everyone gets a chance to speak and when we’ve finished we vote on the best ideas. Sometimes we have to talk to our headteacher and sometimes we talk with school visitors.

What will our School Council do?

Our School Council meets regularly with Mrs Waugh to discuss ideas and may be set the following tasks. These tasks may involve:

  • Collecting information from our class using a questionnaire
  • Collecting new ideas from our class
  • Asking our class their opinions
  • Presenting to the whole school
  • Collecting information from our teachers
  • Talking to school visitors

We have organised money raising events, such bun or book sales and bring ideas to Mr Moss about what we would like to raise money for.

Election Process

Here at St Mary’s, every year group, from Reception to Year 4, chooses one representative, and Years 5 and 6 choose two representatives, to be members of the school council.

Elections are held in the final half term of the year to allow time for the outgoing council to hand over to the new incoming representatives.

Before they are voted for, candidates have to give a speech to their class explaining why they want to be on the council and what ideas they have to bring. The class will then vote for their new elected members.
